Portfolio } Zen Bath on a Budget!

June 19, 2007

So, you’ve got dreams of a zen spa-style bathroom and you’re limited by budget and painting constraints by your landlord?  I decorated this bathroom for under $120!  It’s not entirely sustainable though I did attempt to minimize the purchase of plastics and the concept of re-use/recycle is definitely present.

  • Ceramic lotion pump – $12 (Bed, Bath & Beyond)
  • Japanese ceramic dishes for soap and candle – $6 (Central Market)
  • Wood asian-style candle platform for bath cosmetics – $3 (thrift store)
  • Wicker baskets to organize accessories, etc. – $2 (yard sale)
  • Wood drawers, Japanese pottery and etagerie for storage, organizing make-up and accessories and making use of vertical space – Free
  • Shower curtain and towel – $60 (Bed, Bath & Beyond)
  • Plants – Free
  • Framed Cards – $16 (Cost Plus)
  • White cotton rugs (not showing) – $12 (Bed, Bath & Beyond)

If you were to buy everything new, it would still be a great deal…between $200-400. With fewer constraints, I’d add a nice sage paint on the walls and get a wood etagerie in medium tones to match the other brown tones in the room.

What kind of theme do you want in your bathroom?
Think of a 2-3 color scheme and look for items that tie in with that.

If you’re on a budget, yards sales and thrift stores are great places to find things, and it’s friendlier to the earth to recycle than buy new, unless you buy sustainably-made.  Little dishes like I’ve used here are only a few bucks at grocery stores that carry Asian cuisine. Baskets are plentiful at thrift stores and also new at places like Cost Plus, and Pier 1 Imports.
